Yesterday, my wife and I were talking about how when you're working in a really cool space, you just feel differently about what you do and how you work.
Think about the places you enjoy working—coffee shops or other places where you're a repeat visitor. Why not try recreating that atmosphere in your home office?
To do that, think about the following when you go to a coffee shop that you really love (or another type of place you like to hang out):
- What materials do you see around you?
- What is the lighting like?
- Are there interesting fixtures or other fascinating elements?
- What are the materials on the walls? Is it wood, a contrast of metal and wood, stone, concrete, or something else?
- What is the overall feel of the place—is it industrial, rustic, retro?
- What is it that I like about this space?
Also think about the furniture. Furniture adds a lot of character to a room. There's a difference between going to a diner and sitting on a vinyl bench and going to a really elegant restaurant and sitting in a really nice chair with cloth napkins and things that create a special vibe.
As you're thinking about how you could make your office feel better so you can be more in the zone, evaluate what you like about your workspace when you're working in a different location and think about how you could incorporate some of those elements into your home office as well.
